IM Love Process

I was tasked with creating a 15 second short-short film. The requirements were: -15 seconds (no more, no less) -3 shots, exactly -we have to use a pre-rigged character -concept to fully rendered final film in 9 weeks Whether or not it told a story is up to the creator. I decided to tell a story about a lonely fat guy on a computer!

Character Development
Character Development

The first thing was to design the character. The gag comes from how repulsive and ridiculous the main character is, so character design was very important. I decided to start with the Morpheus rig, so that I could modify it to make a gross-looking fat guy. As you can see, my references were pretty fun to find, not so fun to look at.

I wanted to really push myself with texturing and modeling. But, once again only a few weeks before animation needed to start. So naturally, I decided to make it harder on myself! I wanted to make the setting something interested, so I decided that our internet lover worked at a computer store. And so, I had to model and texture some very visibly busted computers. This really came out quite well, and I'm proud of it.

Set Design
Set Design

I really wanted to design a claustrophobic and dank set for this film. You can see that I modeled more computers here, and even made some gross stains on the wall. Everything here was made to feel like some loser's nerd-headquarters. I think I pulled that off.

Lighting Development
Lighting Development

I wanted this piece to only be lit by the computer monitors in the piece. It was a very difficult thing to pull off, but it needed to be in order to keep the focus on the character and the monitors. It also kept the piece feeling very alone and isolated. Which was a bonus!

A 15 second short film about being lonely and looking for love in a digital age. This project had very specific demands and a very short deadline (10 weeks from concept to finish package) and required me to use all of my skill set in order to complete. You can see more of my process in the gallery below.
